An Old Obsession: Bolt Action Romanians

Generally speaking, I'm not an early adopter of new things. Technology, games etc. Here I am writing a blog, so clearly I'm devolving as well. However, when Bolt Action came out in 2012 I was into that straight away. I'd always poured over WW2 history and here was a chance to get stuck into on the table top. For a couple of years, a mate and I played the shit out of it - me with Soviets, he with Germans. We barely even needed the rulebook we played it so often, not something that happens regularly for me.

Sadly, that came to an end. The mate in question moved across the country and I found myself playing no games of any sort. The second edition of Bolt Action passed me by entirely, althought I continued to collect miniatures and paint armies.

This all changed with the third edition of the game. It's 2026 and I find myself within an active gaming group, full of like minded nerds. My suggestion of demo-ing Bolt Action at the club was met with enthusiasm and so three of us fumbled our way through a couple of games to a great reception. The rules are much improved (IMHO) and it's been a breeze to pickup.

Before too long, we've had a nicely painted American paratrooper army and a growing German force on the table. Not to mention a some really cool terrain collections that continue to improve. It seemed like a great excuse to touch up and add some units to my existing Soviet and Romanian armies, so in the case of the latter I picked up some extra dudes from locals Elite Miniatures, who stock Empress/Tsuba Romanians in Australia. I painted them up straight away and they were a pleasure. Fantastic Paul Hicks sculpts that I would highly recommend.

Anyway, enjoy!

I use these guys in game to represent various units of the Second Mountain Division of the Romanian Army. A really interesting and storied unit that fought all the way through from 1941-45, on both sides of the war. They had the odd distinction of being one of the furthest advancing units of the Axis during Case Blue, and became known as elite, realiable specialists - something of an anomaly among the 'secondary' nations of WW2.

Thanks for looking, maybe I'll do another post soon with my Soviet Army. Although, more Old World content is looking likely with the resumption of the Badlands Campaign!
